Skin cyst treatment

A skin cyst is a raised, round bump, developed under the skin often filled with fluid or pus. Cysts are common and can appear anywhere in the body. These are typically harmless and often do not require treatment. However, some skin cysts may need medical intervention if they become infected, painful, or a cosmetic concern.

What is the difference between acne and a skin cyst?

Acne is a common skin issue caused by blocked pores from oil and dead skin. It can vary from small pimples to large cysts, depending on its severity. People commonly find acne on the face, neck, back, shoulders, and chest.

Cysts are closed skin pockets that can be filled with fluid, pus, or other material. They are typically not inflamed unless infected with bacteria. Compared to acne, which are typically smaller and widespread, skin cysts are more localized and typically only one or few developed at a time. Skin cysts may require surgical interventions compared to acne treatment which includes topical and oral medications.

Types of skin cysts?

There are many types of skin cysts and some of the common types include:

This type of cyst develops in the top layer of skin and the cysts are filled with keratin, a protein found in skin cells. They are most commonly located on the face, neck, and trunk (1). The epidermoid cyst can range in color from skin-colored to yellowish color.
Although epidermoid cysts are also known as sebaceous cysts, it is a misleading term as it does not involve the sebaceous gland. Other common synonyms include infundibular cyst, epidermal cyst, and epidermal inclusion cyst. Although these cysts are typically harmless, in very rare cases they can lead to the development of cancer (2).

A cyst develops from hair follicles and is also filled with keratin. Typically found on the scalp. Also known as trichilemmal cyst.

A cyst developed under the skin along the joints or tendons. Most commonly seen on the wrist, hand, and fingers and rarely developed on feet and ankles.
The ganglion cysts are filled with a clear fluid similar to the fluid found in joints (synovial fluid). Most ganglion cysts are painless and do not interfere with the daily functions. However, depending on the size and the location of the ganglion cyst, occasionally some cysts might press on nerves causing pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness (3).
These are small, painless, white cysts also known as milk spots. These cysts are formed when keratin becomes trapped under the skin surface. They are commonly distributed on the face, typically around the eyes and nose. But they can also be present in other areas of the body.

Causes of Skin Cysts

Skin cysts can be developed in any individual and it is hard to pinpoint to one cause for the development of skin cysts. Factors that would increase the chances of developing skin cysts include:

  • Having family members with skin cysts (especially pilar cysts can be hereditary)
  • Women are more prone to develop skin cysts than men
  • People with acne can develop cysts more often than people without acne
  • Individuals in middle age are likely to develop skin cysts

What Type of Doctors Treat Skin Cysts

Usually, a skilled skin doctor is the best choice to diagnose and treat skin cysts accurately and effectively.

When should you seek treatment for a cyst?

Cysts are typically benign and do not need treatment. But you should seek treatment if you are experiencing following symptoms:

  • Signs of infection: when you notice signs of inflammation such as redness, skin feels warm to the touch, swelling, or drainage of pus
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Rapid growth or change in appearance: when the cyst grows quickly or if you notice a change of color of the cyst or the it has an irregular shape
  • Interfere with your daily functions: when a cyst is affecting the movement of functions such as joints or when clothing or jewelry rub on or irritate the cyst
  • Cosmetic concerns: when the cyst is noticeable, or if it affects the way you look

Cyst Removal in Phoenix

Prior to any cyst removal, a consultation is necessary. The outcome of the cyst removal depends on the treatment procedure, the location of the cyst, and the type of the cyst. Some individuals will notice quick results with minimal side effects while some patients have to wait a few days to see complete healing. If the cyst is infected, the doctor will also prescribe oral antibiotics, which will take about 7-10 days to complete.

Do cysts resolve on their own?

No, typically cysts will not resolve on their own. However, as most of the cysts are benign and painless, most people will not even notice the skin cysts are there.

Cyst Treatment at Home

Some people use apple cider vinegar or tree tea oil to treat skin cysts. However, these are not medically proven treatments and should not be used to treat skin cysts at home. Picking, rubbing or squeezing a cyst can damage it and make it harder to remove. As some skin cysts can be infected, damaging the cyst could lead to the spreading of the infection to the other parts of the skin.

Cyst Treatment in Phoenix

Prior to any cyst treatment, a consultation is necessary to determine the potential options for treatment. In many cases, it is recommended to monitor the cyst without treatments unless there are any symptoms. The treatment plans for skin cysts depend on the type, location, and symptoms of the cyst. Some of the common treatments for skin cysts are:

This is a minor surgical procedure where the contents of the cyst are removed using a small cut. As this procedure only removes the content of the cyst leaving the cyst walls behind, it can lead to recurrence of the cyst. This is a minimally invasive method as the cut is small compared to a surgical incision. If the lancing procedure can be combined with the removal of the cyst wall, it can reduce the chances of recurrence of the cyst.
During a surgical removal of a cyst, the contents and the wall of the cyst are completely removed. This procedure is typically done under local anesthesia and depending on the size of the cyst a few stitches may be necessary to close the surgical incision.
If the cyst is infected, oral antibiotics will be prescribed. However, antibiotics alone cannot completely heal the cyst, it can only control the infection. When cysts get bigger and tender to touch, it could be due to inflammation and some doctors may use steroid injections to reduce the inflammation and shrink the cyst. Typically medications are given in combination with the removal of content of the cyst or surgical excision of the cyst (4).

Does cyst removal hurt?

In most cases, doctors can use minimally invasive methods such as lancing and needle aspiration to treat the cysts. Surgery is more invasive than other treatments. However, it will be done with local anesthesia. This means you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.

Post Cyst Treatment Care and Healing Time

For the first 1-2 days after the removal of the cyst, keep the area clean and dry and after the first 2 days you can gently wash the area with soap and water. Surgical removal will take a few days to heal. Both needle aspiration and lancing procedures will heal quicker.
However, healing time will also depend on the underlying medical conditions of the patient. If you have any medical conditions or concerns about healing time, make sure to discuss it with the physician prior to the procedure.
