What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease that causes your body to make new skin cells too quickly. As a result, thick, scaly rashes called plaques form on the skin, especially on knees, elbows, the lower back, and the scalp. Called “plaque psoriasis,” this form of the condition affects 90% of people with the disease. Another common form of psoriasis appears as small red dots or blotches spread over large areas. Psoriasis is often accompanied by itching, stinging, or burning and can increase the risk of developing serious diseases, such as psoriatic arthritis or diabetes.

Treatment for psoriasis depends on the severity of the condition, i.e., how many and which areas of your body are affected. First-line treatment includes over-the-counter and prescription creams and shampoos. For more severe cases, systemic medications and light therapy may be prescribed.

In treating your psoriasis, our board-certified dermatologist will not only consider the severity of the disease but also its effect on your quality of life. With guidance, you will learn how to develop a good skin care routine, recognize the triggers to flare-ups, and, when necessary, modify your lifestyle to prevent the psoriasis from becoming worse. With personalized consultation and regular follow-up, you can gain control over the condition.
