What are Warts?

Warts are noncancerous skin growths caused by an infection from the human papilloma virus (HPV). Types of warts include common warts, which are small, tough bumps that typically appear on the fingers, hands, and knees; plantar warts, which are thick, sometimes painful, corn-like growths on the soles of the feet; genital warts, which are a sexually transmitted disease; flat warts, which appear in places shaved or scratched frequently; and filiform warts, long, narrow tags of skin that appear on the face, eyelids, or nose. Common warts are usually painless and can resolve on their own over time.

Warts are difficult to treat and require, on average, 6 office visits. Your doctor may choose to destroy the wart by freezing it (cryosurgery) or burning it off (electrocautery). Chemical applications may also be used, such as cantharidin, podophyllin, or tretinoin. Over-the-counter wart-removers, which contain salicylic acid, dissolve the wart; these also take repeated applications over time. Along with other remedies, soaking the wart in warm water and paring
away the dead skin will speed its disappearance.

We recognize that even apparently minor conditions such as a wart can cause discomfort and interfere with daily activities. We can provide quick removal of common warts as well as treatment for painful warts, warts that do not respond to over-the-counter remedies, and warts that appear on the face and other tender areas of the body.
