Cancer

What is Skin Cancer?

Like other forms of cancer, skin cancer is an abnormal growth of cells. It usually develops on skin exposed to the sun. Common forms of skin cancer include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Scaly patches; waxy bumps or horn-like growths; rough or bright red spots on the lips; and moles that change in size or color, bleed, or are irregular in shape are some early signs of the disease. Fair-skinned people or those with a history of sunburns are particularly vulnerable to developing some form of skin cancer.

Because early detection and treatment are critical in preventing the spread of cancer to other parts of your body, your doctor will usually take a tissue sample for biopsy. If the sample is malignant (cancerous), the affected area and a circle of skin around it will be excised (cut away) and the wound stitched up. Other procedures may also be recommended, such as Mohs micrographic surgery, electrosurgery, and cryosurgery (freezing and destroying abnormal tissue), among others.

Our practice is built around a well-trained team that stays up to date on the latest research. Whether dealing with our board-certified dermatologist, nurse practitioner, medical assistants, or office personnel, each staff member takes the time to understand your concerns, to explain the procedures, and to answer your questions.
