What is Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis—more commonly known as eczema—is a chronic, inflammatory condition that can make your skin red, blotchy, and itchy. Commonly connected to a family history of allergies, onset frequently occurs in infancy or childhood and may persist into adolescence and adulthood. Often accompanied by asthma or seasonal allergies, symptoms of atopic dermatitis include dry, flaky skin; inflammation; dark-colored patches; rough patches; moderate to severe itching; oozing and crusting; and sometimes swelling.

Diagnosis of atopic dermatitis is based on your medical history and symptoms. In severe or atypical cases, patch testing may also be recommended. Good, consistent skin care, moisturizer use, and prescription and over-the-counter treatments can calm the skin and alleviate discomfort. To control itching, avoid scratchy fabrics and synthetic material (wool, nylon, polyester, viscose, and rayon) and wear soft, light clothing that lets your skin breathe (cotton, linen, and chambray).

Although atopic dermatitis cannot be cured, it can be controlled. We can help you learn how to avoid allergens that can make your condition worse. We will also develop a customized treatment plan that includes guidance in making lifestyle changes and tips on how to cope.

What is an Allergy Patch Test?

Saguaro Dermatology, located in central Phoenix (just south of the Biltmore/Arcadia area and north of Tempe) offers patch testing for persistent eczema. There are many types of allergies, but many people aren’t aware of the allergic form of eczema called “allergic contact dermatitis” (ACD).
