Botox

What is Botox?

Botox is the brand name for Botulinum toxin type A. Popularized as a cosmetic procedure to eliminate “frown lines,” “crows’ feet,” and wrinkles around the lips, injections of Botox are also used to treat neurological and physiological conditions such as eye twitching, muscle contractions, chronic migraines, and more. Botox works by blocking nerve signals to muscles that contract under the skin tissue, thus smoothing out the wrinkles. Don’t confuse Botox with dermal fillers, which plump up tissues to eliminate lines.

Botox treatment is not entirely pain free, but the needles are small, and the procedure is over quickly. While early use of Botox could produce a “frozen” effect, current smaller doses, called “Baby Botox,” eliminate lines while still providing natural movement. Common side effects after Botox treatments include pain, headache, and bruising. Botox begins working one to three days after injection and typically lasts three months or longer. Serious side effects are rare.

Although used cosmetically, Botox injection is a medical treatment and should be performed by an experienced dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Our board-certified dermatologist and professional staff will know the specifics of your health history and treatment and will be able to respond to any concerns you have. Treatments provided by Saguaro Dermatology are always customized to an individual patient’s needs, lifestyle, and other circumstances.
